HSK 1 Exam Format Overview

The HSK (Hànyǔ Shuǐpíng Kǎoshì) Level 1 is the first and most basic test of Chinese proficiency. It is designed for learners who can understand and use very simple words and sentences. The test is approximately 40 minutes long and consists of two sections:

  • Listening (20 minutes): 20 questions total. You will hear short phrases or sentences and must choose the correct picture or answer based on what you hear.
  • Reading (20 minutes): 20 questions total. This section tests your ability to recognize characters, words, and simple sentences, often by matching words to pictures or completing basic sentences.

There is no writing or speaking component in HSK 1. To pass, you generally need to score at least 120 out of 200 total points.

Key Grammar Points for HSK 1

HSK 1 grammar is very simple. The focus is on basic sentence structure and a few essential particles.

The 是 (shì) Sentence

Used to equate two things (A = B).

我是学生。 Wǒ shì xuésheng. I am a student.

The 有 (yǒu) Sentence

Used to express possession ("to have").

我有一本书。 Wǒ yǒu yì běn shū. I have a book.

Question with 吗 (ma)

Turn a statement into a yes/no question by adding 吗 at the end.

你是老师吗? Nǐ shì lǎoshī ma? Are you a teacher?

Using 很 (hěn) with Adjectives

很 is often used to link a subject and an adjective. It can mean "very" but is often used where English would use "to be".

我很好。 Wǒ hěn hǎo. I am (very) good.

Basic Word Order: Subject + Verb + Object

Chinese follows a similar sentence structure to English.

我喝水。 Wǒ hē shuǐ. I drink water.

她吃水果。 Tā chī shuǐguǒ. She eats fruit.

Tip: Don't get bogged down by grammar theory at this stage. Focus on mimicking and understanding these core sentence patterns through examples.

2-Month Study Timeline

This plan assumes daily study of 30-60 minutes. Adjust the pace to fit your schedule.

Weeks 1-4: Foundation Building

  • Goal: Learn 60-80 words and basic greetings.
  • Focus: Numbers, pronouns, common nouns, and key verbs (是,有,去,吃,喝).
  • Action: Practice pronunciation and character recognition daily. Start forming simple sentences.

Weeks 5-8: Expansion & Practice

  • Goal: Learn the remaining 70-90 words.
  • Focus: Question words, adjectives, time words, and family terms.
  • Action: Combine all vocabulary into longer sentences. Begin taking practice listening tests.

Daily Study Routine (30-60 Minutes)

Consistency is more important than long, infrequent sessions.

  1. 5 min Warm-up: Review yesterday's words with flashcards.
  2. 15 min New Material: Learn 5-10 new words. Say them aloud, write them, and use them in a sentence.
  3. 10 min Grammar Practice: Practice one grammar point from the list above.
  4. 10 min Listening: Listen to a short HSK 1 dialogue or audio clip.
  5. 5-10 min Review: Quick flashcard review of all words learned that week.

Tip: Use "dead time" like commuting or waiting in line to review vocabulary on a mobile app. Little and often is the key to retention.

Practice Resources

  • Official HSK Resources: The official HSK 1 mock test and vocabulary list from Hanban are essential.
  • Flashcard Apps: Anki or Pleco are excellent for memorizing characters and words. You can find pre-made HSK 1 decks.
  • Listening Practice: YouTube channels like "Learn Chinese with Yangyang" or "Everyday Chinese" offer beginner-friendly content.
  • Practice Tests: Search online for "HSK 1 practice test" to find free sample exams. This is crucial for getting used to the format and timing.

Warning: Don't just recognize words in a list. The exam tests your ability to understand them in context. Always practice with audio and in sentences.

Practice

Try to translate these simple sentences into English:

  1. 你好吗? (Nǐ hǎo ma?)
  2. 我去学校。 (Wǒ qù xuéxiào.)
  3. 她叫什么? (Tā jiào shénme?)
  4. 这是我的书。 (Zhè shì wǒ de shū.)

Now, try to say these in Chinese:

  1. Thank you.
  2. I drink water.
  3. What is this?
  4. Goodbye, teacher.
