Introduction to the Present Tense

The present tense in Spanish, known as el presente de indicativo, is a fundamental building block for communication. It is used in ways similar to English, describing actions happening now, habitual routines, general truths, and even near-future events. Mastering its conjugation patterns is your first major step towards fluency. This guide will walk you through regular verbs, stem-changers, and the essential irregular verbs you need to know.

Regular Verb Conjugation

Spanish verbs are categorized by their infinitive endings: -ar, -er, and -ir. To conjugate a regular verb, you remove this infinitive ending and add the appropriate present tense endings.

-AR Verbs (Example: Hablar - to speak)

PronounEndingConjugation (Hablar)Pronunciation
yo-ohablo(ah-bloh)
-ashablas(ah-blahs)
él/ella/usted-ahabla(ah-blah)
nosotros/nosotras-amoshablamos(ah-blah-mohs)
vosotros/vosotras-áishabláis(ah-blah-ees)
ellos/ellas/ustedes-anhablan(ah-blahn)

Yo hablo español. (yoh ah-bloh ehs-pah-nyol) I speak Spanish.

Ellos hablan con la profesora. (eh-yohs ah-blahn kohn lah proh-feh-soh-rah) They talk with the teacher.

-ER Verbs (Example: Comer - to eat)

PronounEndingConjugation (Comer)Pronunciation
yo-ocomo(koh-moh)
-escomes(koh-mehs)
él/ella/usted-ecome(koh-meh)
nosotros/nosotras-emoscomemos(koh-meh-mohs)
vosotros/vosotras-éiscoméis(koh-meh-ees)
ellos/ellas/ustedes-encomen(koh-mehn)

Nosotros comemos frutas. (noh-soh-trohs koh-meh-mohs froo-tahs) We eat fruits.

¿Tú comes carne? (too koh-mehs kahr-neh) Do you eat meat?

-IR Verbs (Example: Vivir - to live)

-IR verbs are very similar to -ER verbs, with only two differences in the nosotros and vosotros forms.

PronounEndingConjugation (Vivir)Pronunciation
yo-ovivo(bee-boh)
-esvives(bee-behs)
él/ella/usted-evive(bee-beh)
nosotros/nosotras-imosvivimos(bee-bee-mohs)
vosotros/vosotras-ísvivís(bee-bees)
ellos/ellas/ustedes-enviven(bee-behn)

Ella vive en Madrid. (eh-yah bee-beh ehn mah-dreed) She lives in Madrid.

¿Vivís cerca del parque? (bee-bees sehr-kah del pahr-keh) Do you all (Spain) live near the park?

Tip: Notice the pattern: the yo form always ends in -o for regular verbs. Also, the nosotros form for -AR verbs ends in -amos, while for -ER/-IR verbs it ends in -emos/-imos.

Stem-Changing Verbs

Also called "boot verbs" or "shoe verbs" because the stem change affects all forms except nosotros and vosotros (drawing the shape of a boot). There are three main types.

E → IE Stem Changers (Example: Pensar - to think)

The e in the stem changes to ie in all but the nosotros/vosotros forms.

PronounConjugation
yopienso
piensas
él/ella/ustedpiensa
nosotros/nosotraspensamos
vosotros/vosotraspensáis
ellos/ellas/ustedespiensan

Yo pienso que sí. (yoh pee-ehn-soh keh see) I think so.

O → UE Stem Changers (Example: Poder - to be able to)

The o in the stem changes to ue.

PronounConjugation
yopuedo
puedes
él/ella/ustedpuede
nosotros/nosotraspodemos
vosotros/vosotraspodéis
ellos/ellas/ustedespueden

¿Puedes ayudarme? (poo-eh-dehs ah-yoo-dar-meh) Can you help me?

E → I Stem Changers (Example: Pedir - to ask for)

This change is common in -IR verbs. The e changes to i.

PronounConjugation
yopido
pides
él/ella/ustedpide
nosotros/nosotraspedimos
vosotros/vosotraspedís
ellos/ellas/ustedespiden

Ellos siempre piden pizza. (eh-yohs see-ehm-preh pee-dehn pee-tsah) They always order pizza.

Warning: The verb Jugar (to play) is a special case: it's a U → UE stem changer (e.g., yo juego). It's the only common verb with this pattern, so memorize it separately.

Irregular Yo Forms

Some verbs are regular for most subjects but have a unique form for the yo (I) form. This is very common with verbs ending in -ger, -gir, -cer, and -cir.

  • Hacer (to do/make): yo hago (ah-goh)
  • Poner (to put): yo pongo (pohn-goh)
  • Salir (to leave): yo salgo (sahl-goh)
  • Traer (to bring): yo traigo (trah-ee-goh)
  • Conocer (to know): yo conozco (koh-nohs-koh)

Yo hago la cena los domingos. (yoh ah-goh lah seh-nah lohs doh-meen-gohs) I make dinner on Sundays.

Yo conozco a tu hermano. (yoh koh-nohs-koh ah too ehr-mah-noh) I know your brother.
