1927年蒋光慈为纪念上海工人武装起义创作了中篇小说《短裤党》，小说中的人物形象的塑造一直饱受争论。1927年2月，上海工人阶级举行武装起义，许多同志英勇牺牲。领导干部杨直夫、史兆炎总结失败教训，积极准备，等待时机。3月21日，在共产党领导下，几十万工人举行罢工，接着又举行第三次武装起义，终于取得了胜利。这是现代文学史上第一部表现中国共产党领导工人武装斗争的小说。
