《思怜诗》共52首，分成《思美诗》和《怜愚诗》两部分，宋应星取两卷的字“思”和“怜”命名为《思怜诗》。《思美诗》10首，都是七律，《怜愚诗》42首，都是七绝。主要反映了宋应星的人生观，用文学形式表达他对人生价值和意义等问题的看法。宋应星在诗中塑造了两大类典型人物，分别给以褒美和讥讽。他继承了唐代大诗人白居易（772—846）倡导的新乐府运动的诗论传统，主张写诗应当揭露时政弊端，反映社会现实，并且给人以启迪和教化。
