段正元一生的思想极为丰富，他以道德为轴心，以儒学为重点，以道德为核心观念，对中国传统文化从本原和本体层次进行融会贯通，对秦汉以后儒学发展偏离、扭曲了原始儒学的基本精神进行了正本清源，对儒家“道统”结合先秦道家思想进行现代重构，对儒家“学统”批判中进行转化，对儒家“政统”通过“内圣外王”重新梳理。本书是从他的《师道全书》60卷及其他单行本中挑选出来汇集而成。
