袁世凯任总统以至于称帝之一段时间中，政象光怪陆离，今日复视其文献官书，犹多诡笔，如当时文电有称“马上大夫”者，指马相伯先生。洪宪伪朝，海内耆老之名多被篡用，马亦不免。又有所谓“章都统”，则指章太炎先生，盖尝被任为热河都统，以举人承乏边将，事至滑稽，遂有致书先生而尊之为“枚叔将军”者。
