《四库全书总目》地理类存目著录明崇祯十六年进士黄淳耀所撰《山左笔谈》一卷，凡分十九条，提要云：“所纪皆山东风土、形势、山川、古迹及海运、备倭诸事宜。征引拉杂，殊鲜伦理。案淳耀生平未尝游山东，所著《陶庵集》内亦无此书名。此本见曹溶《学海类编》中，疑亦出伪托也。”“山左”即山东别称。此书后收入《丛书集成初编》，遂广泛流传。《总目》虽指出此书疑伪的三条理由，但因无确证，并未被学界广泛接受。
