金陵聚宝门城墉，左右袤延，淮水邪界于其北，中狭而旁广，故城厢隙地，如舒两翼。然土人呼门东、门西。而徐锦衣园亭分踞其胜，因又有东、西花园之称。予既辑《凤麓小志》以纪西南隅之名迹，而东城阙如。山川有灵，殆将怨我。会于暮秋之初，访秦君伯虞于南冈草堂，时天雨新霁，景物澄鲜，疏柳摇风，丛芦作雪，相与登孝侯之台，寻鹫峰之寺，俯仰陵谷，不尽流连，古意满怀，呼之欲出。归乃披图检册，就所闻见，排比成编，命曰《东城志略》。
