《九域志》有新志、旧志之分,旧志是指《元丰九域志》,成书于北宋神宗元丰三年,是王存、曾肇与李德刍等人奉敕纂修的;新志是指《新定九域志》,是哲宗绍圣四年经黄裳提议,对元丰旧志的续修增补。因而《九域志》即是以《元丰九域志》和《新定九域志》这两种版本在后世演变流传
