相传今本《孟子》七篇之外尚有四篇,称为《外书》。东汉赵岐《孟子题辞》:“又有外书四篇:《性善辨》、《文说》、《孝经》、《为政》。其文不能宏深,不与内篇相似,似非《孟子》本真。后世依放而托之者也。”汉代流传之《外书》四篇已佚。今本系明人姚士粦伪造。
