中国现存最早的一部解说琴曲标题,记述古代琴曲内容的音乐著作。传为汉代蔡邕所作。全书分类收录47曲。第一类“诗经五曲”,第二类“十二操”、第三类“九引”、第四类“河间杂歌二十一章”。已知《琴操》版本一种是专著体例的本子,如《平津馆丛书》本、《读画斋丛书》本、《邵武徐氏丛书》等,其中以《平津馆丛书》本为最佳。另一种是辑佚书体例的本子,如清嘉庆五年(1800年)王谟辑自《初学记》等类书的《汉魏遗书钞》本。两种体例的几种版本在文字上大同小异,所记述的琴曲均为汉代以前音乐生活中流存下来的作品。
