《南中幽芳录》成书于明永乐十年春（公元1412年春），记叙了当时的38品名兰，如：碧玉莲、大雪素、金镶玉、小雪素、金丝莲、黄建素、大贡品等。书中对这38品兰蕙的产地及分布；生态习性；根茎和叶鞘；叶色、叶态、叶质、叶片数；花葶形态、着花数量、放花时间；花色、花形、花香等作了准确简练、生动形象的描述赏评，文字优美，韵味无穷，读文如见花，隐隐有馨香袭来。重要兰谱，兰花作为文学作品的描写对象最早可追溯到2500-3000年前。公元前600至1000年之间成书的《诗经》就有兰花的记录：“溱与洧，方涣涣兮。仕与女，方秉兰兮”。
