《海陬冶游录》即为王韬描绘上海青楼的冶游笔记，是书依余怀《板桥杂记》体例分上中下三卷。作者自言：“旅窗无俚，因病得闲，枨触旧怀，抽毫暝写，姑循余曼翁《板桥杂记》之例，以雅游、丽品、轶事分隶之。“上卷”雅游“，绘沪上青楼靡丽纷华之景；中卷丽品”，展还上名姝风流艳媚之态；下卷“轶事”，叙申江烟花风情万种之事。王韬另有《海陬冶游附录》三卷，《海陬冶游余录》一卷，与此形成“海陬冶游”系列作品。《海陬冶游录》对晚清青楼笔记颇有影响，启迪了后代同类作品，如黄式权《淞南梦影录》即“权舆于《海陬冶游录》“而成。
