古典小说《红楼梦》研究专著。蔡元培著。原载《小说月报》1916年1至6月7卷1—6期。商务印书馆1917年9月出版铅印本。1922年第6版时,增自序《对于胡适之红楼梦考证之商榷》一文。至1930年已经印行第10版。是当时流行的影响较大的旧红学索隐派的代表作。作者明确地把《红楼梦》称为“政治小说”。他之所以要搞《红楼梦》的“索隐”,目的是为了宣传民族主义的政治思想,带有明确的政治目的。
