万事必先研究而后有预备之方，必先经验而后知受病之源。余虽不称经验之人，然将我生平所得和盘托出，以供读者之前，知社会之万恶、人心之险诈，并知余生之不辰。余吴人也，早失怙恃，又鲜兄弟及姊妹，徧尝人世间之悽凉苦况矣。当在深闺寂寞之时，辄将经过及感想之事援笔记之，名之曰埋愁室丛话。余本不欲以壮志而託閒讴，奈承诸同志谆谆以出版为嘱，并曰：一鸟鸣空，或可唤醒羣生，稍补于社会。余则不敢自命为有心人，愿世人有则改之无则勉之，幸勿忠言逆耳。须知良药苦口，斯则著者之深愿也。
