北宋张载著。原名《订顽》,曾书於张载书室西墉,程颐改称今名。其写成在《模渠易说》之后,《正蒙》之前,后来也编入《正蒙》中,即《乾称篇》首段。全篇根据张载的气一元论宇宙观和人之本性即天地之性的人性论,宣扬一种仁孝、兼爱和乐天顺命的道德思想,认为应该把一切人,自君主以至穷苦无告的人,都看作兄弟,把天地间的万物看作自己的朋友,人活着就要遵循天道,努力作为,直到问心无愧地死去。文中的“乾称父,坤称母”是譬喻之辞。单册初刻于清乾隆六年(1736年)。《西铭》全文共三百一拾五个字。
