叔向问晏子曰：“齐国之德衰矣，今子何若？”晏子对曰：“婴闻事明君者，竭心力以没其身，行不逮则退，不以诬持禄。事惰君者，优游其身以没其世，力不能则去，不以谀持危。且婴闻君子之事君也，进不失忠，退不失行。不苟合以隐忠，可谓不失忠；不持利以伤廉，可谓不失行。”叔向曰：“善哉！《诗》有之曰：‘进退维谷。’其此之谓欤！”
