晏子使吴，吴王谓行人曰：“吾闻晏婴，盖北方辩于辞、习于礼者也。”命傧者曰：“客见则称天子请见。”明日，晏子有事，行人曰：“天子请见。”晏子蹴然。行人又曰：“天子请见。”晏子蹴然。又曰：“天子请见。”晏子蹴然者三，曰：“臣受命弊邑之君，将使于吴王之所，以不敏而迷惑，入于天子之朝，敢问吴王恶乎存？”然后吴王曰：“夫差请见。”见之以诸侯之礼。
