景公问晏子曰：“有臣而强，足恃乎？”晏子对曰：“不足恃。”“有兄弟而强，足恃乎？”晏子对曰：“不足恃。”公忿然作色曰：“吾今有恃乎？”晏子对曰：“有臣而强，无甚如汤；有兄弟而强，无甚如桀。汤有弑其君，桀有亡其兄，岂以人为足恃哉，可以无亡也！”此章与“景公问臣并兄弟之强而晏子对以汤桀无以垂训”，故着于此篇。
