唐《艺文类聚》卷4引本经文，敦煌遗经斯3061《太上洞玄 灵宝中元玉京玄都大献经》与本经部分相当。玄嶷《甄正论》卷 中曰道士刘无待造《大献经》。吉冈义丰《道教と佛教第三》推测 本经或出自萧梁，唐道士刘无待进行了加工。《敦煌と中国道教》 中石井昌子称其为六朝古灵宝经。秋月观暎《三元思想的形成》认 为本经撰于隋末唐初。元始天尊向太上大道君述罪人地狱受苦之 由，劝人依三元大献法，拔度亡灵。有释文，发挥经义。
