序称本诀为葛洪撰,葛洪所撰原为10卷,本书为其中一卷。不知何时又将一卷析为三卷。但卷上大部分与唐《通幽诀》同。卷末《唐仵达灵真人记》称其于玄宗时得《真元丹诀》,记文撰于唐僖宗乾符二年（875年），本诀当出唐末。述外丹，内丹之术。
