符咒之术由来久矣，黄帝受之于西王母，而传之少昊，少昊传瑞顼，代广其意，而绵传不绝，李耳尽发其秘，凭符咒而开道教。从者从矣。后当春秋战国世，术者见世终不为也，乃退隐森壑，以修养为事。符咒几于绝也。至汉顺帝时，有张真人名陵者出。得异书于石室，入蜀之鹤鸣山，息居修炼。以符录而为人治病，驱鬼，役狐，无不立应。人乃尊之。后得天师对号，今道教所以不衰者，良以有天师也。天师之恃以役使鬼神之道。全仗符咒为之主。符咒之力，可见其伟矣。
