《大道真传》是西蜀魏尧（则之）口述，由浙东陈孟笔录整理而成。《大道真传》所示最详尽处，当为“火候”一事。火候是丹学三大奥秘之一，为秘不轻传的机要，能掌握火候则丹可成，昧于火候万无一成。《大道真传》将火候逐节剖析，井然有序，可循层次而验。《一贯天机直讲·发端》中云：“谨于火候之逐节事条，紊其次第，少隐其义，以便学者自证。”《真传》和《直讲》实相表里，宜互相参照发明。凡《直讲》中未发之“火候逐节”，皆可从《真传》找到答案，故务请学者于两本细细参研。
