明文秉撰。《江南通志》作六卷，《四库全书》作二卷。二卷本首尾无缺，或因卷数有分合之别。记明末遗事，上卷起万历，终天启四年(1624);下卷起天启五年，终崇祯二年(1629)。对妖书和梃击、红丸、移宫三案，以及魏忠贤乱政、崇祯帝钦定逆案之类，无不详载。全文载录《忧危竑议》、《续忧危竑议》、《东林点将录》及《钦定逆案》等。书名取自《诗经》“枝叶未有害，本实先拨”之意，即推究明代灭亡，萌于惨戮群贤之故。
