顺帝名妥欢帖睦尔，明宗之长子。母罕禄鲁氏，名迈来迪，郡王阿儿厮兰之裔孙也。初，太祖取西北诸国，阿儿厮兰率其众来降，乃封为郡王，俾领其部族。及明宗北狩，过其地，纳罕禄鲁氏。延祐七年四月丙寅，生帝于北方，当泰定帝之崩，太师燕铁木儿与诸王大臣迎立文宗，文宗既即位，以明宗嫡长，复遣使迎立之。明宗即位于和宁之北，而立文宗为皇太子，及明宗崩，文宗复正大位。
