宏光元年四月二十五日，大兵破扬州。督师太傅太子太师建极殿大学士兼兵部尚书史可法死之。史公，字道邻，顺天大兴人，始为西安府推官有声，历迁安庐兵备副使，升巡抚，丁母忧，服阕起，总督漕运，巡抚淮阳，久之拜南京兵部尚书。当是时，贼起延绥，蔓延遍天下。江北为贼冲，公与贼大小数十百战，保障江淮。江南、江北，安危皆视乎公。公死而南京亡。
