徐得国传二千年，几与夏、商、周相终始，将必有左史、右史之记焉。秦燔《诗》、《书》，诸侯史记尤甚，邦国之志，百国春秋，荡无孑遗，可胜悼哉！典午之代，有《徐偃王志》，不知作家。揆厥文义，非出周秦，而亦亡矣。爰溯偃王受姓所由来，以迄其子孙失国，经传史子采而辑之，著其系本，考其都邑、冢茔，记其祠庙之在浙东、西者，而终之以辨难之词，仍厥旧名，勒为卷帙，愧无知官之明，聊避数典之诮，作《徐偃王志》。
