一九二三年六月由上海商务印书馆出发，署周作人编译，其中鲁迅十一篇，周作人译十九篇。《现代日本小说集》的目的是在介绍现代日本的小说，所以这集里的十五个著者之中，除了国木田与夏目以外，都是现存的小说家。至于从文坛全体中选出这十五个人，从他们著作里选出这三十篇，是用什么标准，我不得不声明这是大半以个人的趣味为主。但是我们虽然以为纯客观的批评是不可能的，却也不肯以小主观去妄加取舍；我伞兵方法是就已有定评的人和著作中，择取自己所能理解感受者，收入集内，所以我们所选的范围或者未免稍狭；但是在这狭的范围以内的人及其作品却都有永久的价值的。
