短篇小说。写于日本,1929年3月3日完成,连载于同年3、4月《东方杂志》26卷第6、7号,署名M. D。先后收入大江书铺1931年出版的《宿莽》、人民文学出版社1959年3月出版的《茅盾文集》第7卷与1980年4月出版的《茅盾短篇小说集》。作品通过林白霜的恋爱、苦闷、压抑、斗争等心理变化,解剖了大革命失败后小资产阶级知识分子的思想情绪。林白霜曾在时代的巨浪中滚过,但他看四面是一片灰黑,辨不清方向,是政治色盲症患者。通过许多思想斗争,最后找到了力量,看到了闪烁着的希望的微光,终于鼓起勇气迎接未来。作品通过林白霜指出大革命失败后知识分子的正确道路。
