张后胤在并州，太宗就受《春秋左氏传》。后因召入赐宴，言及平昔，从容谓曰：“今日弟子何如？”
后胤对曰：“昔孔子领徒三千，徒者无子男之位。臣翼赞一人，即为万乘主，计臣此功，愈于先圣。”
太宗大悦，即赐马五匹。后为礼部尚书，陪葬献陵。
