高宗东封，窦德玄骑而从。上问德玄曰：“濮阳古谓之帝丘，何也？”德玄不能对。许敬宗策马前对所问，上意称善。
敬宗退而告人曰：“大臣不可无学，吾向见德玄不能对，心实羞之。”
德玄闻之，曰：“人各有能有不能，善守其拙，不强所不知也。”
李勣曰：“敬宗多闻，信美矣，德玄之言，亦善也。”
