《茫茫夜》于1922年3月15日发表于《创造》季刊第1卷第1期，是郁达夫从日本归国后所作的第一篇小说。小说在发表之初遭到了很多批评，当年六月的《时事新报·学灯》刊载了郁达夫《茫茫夜发表以后》一文，其中回应了评论界对《茫茫夜》的诸种批评，同时作家指出，虽然小说“似乎失了中心点的样子”，但自己意在描写的是“一个灵魂的生长”。小说以A城（安庆）为背景，主人公于质夫从上海与吴迟生在黄浦江码头告别，到A城法政学校的风潮；从在北门外商店搭讪少妇，到在妓院结识满足Three Conditions的妓女海棠，通篇看起来像是作者在安庆生活的日记。
