十六年——一九二七——底冬初十月，因为父亲和姊姊的遭难，我单身从故乡流亡出来，到长沙天心阁侧面的一家小客栈中搭住了。那时我的心境底悲伤和愤慨，是很难形容得出来的。因为贪图便宜，客栈底主人便给了我一间非常阴黯的，潮霉的屋子。那屋子后面的窗门，靠着天心阁的城垣，终年不能望见一丝天空和日月。我一进去，就象埋在活的墓场中似的，一连埋了八个整天。
