1920年发表的处女作《约檀河之水》，是张资平的早期作品，大多反映了“五四”时期的青年男女对恋爱自由、婚姻自主的向往和追求，以及陈腐的封建伦理道德和金钱势力对他们的束缚，体现了反封建、渴求解放的思想，这与当时的时代潮流是相吻合的，使得他成了前期创造社中仅次于郁达夫的重要小说家。20年代中期以后，张资平小说创作的重点发生了转移，三角、四角乃至多角恋爱成为他小说创作的主调，令他红极一时，拥有大批的读者。恋爱小说给张资平带来了广泛的声誉，也给他带来了相当多的批判。
