明末虞山刘氏，世业儒，家虽落，名楣也。兄弟守田庐。伯曰赓虞，邑诸生，品行修饬；仲曰肇周，则狡黠嗜利，不务恒业；有妹曰三秀，慧而艳。生时，母梦紫气绕室，醒有异香。六岁母死，父教之读，过目辄了了，捉笔作楷，秀逸独绝。时里有黄亮功者，居任阳之大桥，素雄于财。亮更善居奇。崇祯间，吴中水旱频仍，物价腾贵，藉之囤盈粜虚，家益富。亮貌温厚，而中多机诈，蓄资巨万，节缩常若寒士。年逾二十，始议娶妇，妇则丧夫而挟重资者。父曰：“嫠也，里多请婚者，何必是？”
