《新西游记》虽借《西游记》中人名、事物以反演，然《西游记》皆虚构，而《新西游记》皆实事。以实事解释虚构，作者实略寓祛人迷信之意。
《西游记》皆唐以前事物，而《新西游记》皆现在事物。以现在事物，假唐时人思想推测之，可见世界变迁之理。
