虺蛇乘作腹中鸣 溺女从来罪不轻
我愿宰官绅士辈 育婴保赤广经营
湖州贫家多溺女之习。余母尝言亲眷家有一侍女，嫁后生女，辄溺死之。十年中育七女，无一留者。后复有孕，临盆不育，但闻腹内蛇叫，闻一昼夜，号呼而死。诗不云乎：“维虺维蛇〖虺，音悔。（诗经朱注）虺，蛇属，小颈大头。〗，女子之祥。”然则腹中蛇鸣，岂非被溺之女怨毒所化乎？
