梵名Ca^rya -nida^na 。凡二卷。后汉竺大力、康孟详共译。又作宿行本起经。收于大正藏第三册。叙说释迦牟尼佛托胎、降生，乃至出家、成道之事历。修行本起经为佛传第一分，另外之中本起经（昙果、康孟详共译）为佛传之中分，二经具有连带关系。本经卷上分现变、菩萨降身、试艺三品；卷下为游观、出家二品。异译本有吴·支谦所译之太子瑞应本起经二卷、西晋聂道真所译之异出菩萨本起经一卷。
