南泉和尚，因东西堂争猫儿，泉乃提起云：“大众，道得即救，道不得即斩却也！”众无对。泉遂斩之。晚，赵州外归。泉举似州，州乃脱履安头上而出。泉云：“子若在即救得猫儿。”
无门曰：且道：赵州顶草鞋意作么生？若向者里下得一转语，便见南泉令不虚行。其或未然，险。
颂曰：赵州若在，倒行此令。夺却刀子，南泉乞命。
