🇫🇷 How to say

to sit down” in French

s'asseoir
Illustration of "to sit down" in a French cultural setting
A person, tired after a long walk, approaches a wooden bench in a sun-dappled park and lowers themselves onto it, letting out a sigh of relief.

Usage note

This is a reflexive verb ('se' changes to 'm'', 't'', 'nous', etc.), so you always sit *yourself* down. It's used for the action of moving into a sitting position, not just being seated.
