《南征录汇》为编年体裁，记事起自金天会四年(1126年)闰十一月二十五日，即金军攻陷汴京城之日；止于次年四月一日，即宋徽、钦二帝由刘家寺北迁之时。它比较详细地记载了金军兵临城下，逼迫宋帝投降卖国的整个过程。《南征汇录》中的所录内容，都是从刘同《寿圣院札记》、克锡《青城秘录》、高有恭《行营随笔》、赵士先《毳幕闲谈》、阿嬾《大金武功记》、李东贤《辛斋随笔》，以及无名氏《雏凤清声》、《宋遗民愤谈》和《屯翁目录》等九种私人著述中辑录出来。金李天民把这些内容按年、月、日分条编排成书，故总名之为《南征录汇》。
