晋室既东，江北地为五胡所割据，及西纪四百二十年顷，刘裕受东晋禅，统御南方，建国号曰宋；北方之地，亦次第为拓跋珪所占有，而建国曰魏。自宋而齐而梁而陈为南朝；自魏而齐而周为北朝。南北对峙，约百七十年。我国学术，大受其影响；绘画亦有南北自成风气之观。而其受宗教化，则南北一致，且较前代为盛。
